A drawing can be technically correct and still cause problems if it is printed at the wrong size. A plan reduced too far may hide dimensions, notes and line weights. One printed too large can be awkward to handle, cost more than necessary, or no longer match the scale stated on the drawing. This guide to plan print sizes will help you choose a practical sheet size, preserve the intended scale and send artwork that is ready to print.
Start with the paper sizes
Most architectural, engineering and construction drawings use the ISO A-series paper sizes. The useful principle is simple: each size is half the area of the size above it. Fold an A0 sheet in half and you have A1; fold it again and you have A2. This makes it easier to move drawings between sizes while keeping the same proportions.

These dimensions apply whether the sheet is portrait or landscape. Orientation changes which edge is longest, not the physical size of the paper. For example, an A1 landscape plan gives you 841 mm across the page, which is often more suitable for a wide floor plan or site layout.
Guide to plan print sizes: choose scale first
The paper size should follow the scale, rather than the other way round. Scale tells the reader how a measured distance on the drawing relates to the real object. At 1:100, one centimetre on paper represents one metre on site. At 1:50, the same centimetre represents 50 centimetres, so the drawing shows twice as much detail.
A 1:50 plan is often used where room layouts, fixtures, doors, stairs and annotations need to be easily read. A 1:100 scale is common for general floor plans, planning drawings and larger building layouts. Site plans may be produced at 1:200, 1:500 or smaller, depending on how much surrounding land or context needs to appear on the sheet.
As a quick check, divide the real-world measurement by the scale. A 20-metre building elevation at 1:100 needs 200 mm of drawing width before you add dimensions, notes, a title block or margins. It may fit on A4 in theory, but A3 or A2 could be the more usable choice once the supporting information is included.
Do not assume that a drawing marked 1:100 will remain 1:100 when printed. If a PDF is set to ‘fit’, ‘shrink oversized pages’ or another automatic scaling option, it may be reduced slightly. That can make the stated scale inaccurate. For drawings that will be measured from the sheet, ask for printing at 100% or actual size and ensure the PDF page size matches the requested paper size.
Allow for borders, title blocks and mark-ups
The drawing itself is rarely the only item that needs space. Technical plans commonly include a title block, revision history, north point, scale bar, drawing number, client details and notes. Site teams may also need room for handwritten mark-ups.
Allow a clear margin around the live drawing area, particularly if information runs close to an edge. A plan can be printed edge-to-edge in some cases, but it is usually better practice to keep important dimensions and notes safely inside the page boundary. This also makes folding, filing and copying easier.
Check whether the scale is actually needed
Not every plan needs to be printed to scale. A presentation board, sales layout or annotated sketch may only need to be proportionally correct and clearly legible. In that case, scaling to fit a chosen sheet can be sensible and economical.
It depends on how the print will be used. If a contractor, surveyor or designer needs to take measurements from it, accuracy matters. If it is for a meeting, display or discussion, readability may be the priority. Make this clear when placing the order so the print settings match the purpose.
Match the sheet to the type of drawing
There is no single best size for every project. A detailed kitchen or bathroom layout can work well at A3, particularly when several copies are needed for a meeting. An individual elevation or section may suit A2. Full floor plans, construction drawings and larger planning packs are more commonly produced at A1 or A0 because the extra space keeps annotations clear.
For a large site plan, a smaller scale on A1 or A0 may show the full boundary, access routes and neighbouring context without splitting the drawing across multiple sheets. That can be much easier to review than several tiled pages. However, a large sheet is not automatically better. It costs more to print, is less convenient to post or carry, and can be difficult to use on a busy desk or site table.
If you are issuing a drawing set, consider providing a working large-format copy alongside reduced A3 copies for meetings and filing. The large plan retains the detail, while the smaller version is easier for attendees to handle. This is particularly useful for schools, facilities teams, retailers and small businesses managing refurbishment work.
Colour is another practical decision. Colour plans can distinguish services, phases, revisions, boundaries and areas of responsibility quickly. For everyday site copies, black and white may be more cost-effective, provided the drawing still works without colour. Pale yellow lines, fine greys and colour-only legends can disappear or become confusing in monochrome, so check a proof where possible.
Prepare a plan file that prints correctly
A print-ready PDF is normally the safest format for plan printing. It keeps page dimensions, fonts and line placement more consistent than an image, screenshot or photographed drawing. Export the PDF from the original CAD or design software at the intended paper size, rather than placing the drawing into a new document and stretching it afterwards.
Before sending the file, check these points:
- Confirm the PDF page size, such as A1 landscape or A3 portrait.
- Check that the scale shown in the title block is the scale you want printed.
- Make sure dimensions, notes and revision clouds are readable at the final size.
- Look for lines or text placed too close to the page edge.
- Include a scale bar where practical, especially if the plan may be copied later.
A scale bar is a useful safeguard because it lets the user check whether the sheet has been enlarged or reduced. It does not replace a correct print setting, but it can reveal a problem before someone relies on the drawing.
Avoid sending a mobile phone photo of a plan when a source PDF is available. Perspective distortion, shadows and low resolution can make lines soft and dimensions unreliable. Likewise, a screenshot from CAD software may look acceptable on screen but lack the resolution and page information needed for a clean large-format print.
Avoid the common size and scale mistakes
The most frequent issue is selecting a larger sheet but keeping the same PDF print setting. A plan supplied as A3 and printed on A1 at ‘fit to page’ will be enlarged, changing the scale. The reverse is also true: printing an A1 PDF down to A3 makes it easier to carry but reduces it to a quarter of the original area and can make fine text too small to read.
Another problem is treating line weight as an afterthought. Lines that look bold on a monitor can appear too heavy at A3, while very fine lines may become faint on a reduced copy. If you are producing both large and small versions, check that the plotting settings suit each output size. A separate A3 issue PDF is often better than relying on a reduction of the A1 original.
Finally, check the revision. Plans can change quickly, and an old drawing issued by mistake can create confusion or wasted work. Use clear filenames with a drawing number and revision, and make sure the revision shown on the sheet agrees with the file you send.
